Color

Looking for a bracelet ? You must pay attention to the color of the best diamonds set in the piece. When it comes to diamonds, color actually refers to the lack of color. The American Gem Society (AGS) rates diamonds on a scale from 0 (perfectly colorless) to 10 (light yellow/brown). The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates diamonds from a scale of D (perfectly colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown).

Here’s a breakdown of color ratings, for your convenience:

No color: The AGS rates colorless diamonds from 0 to 1, and the GIA rates colorless diamonds from D to F. Diamonds without color are the highest quality diamonds and the most expensive.
Nearly colorless: The AGS rates these diamonds in the 1.5 to 3 range, and the GIA rates these diamonds G to J. You’ll find that these diamonds actually appear colorless when mounted.
Faint color: The AGS ranks these from 3.5 to 4.5. The GIA ranks these from K to M. At less than .5 carats, the diamond appears colorless when mounted. In larger diamonds, some color is visible.
Very light color: The AGS ranks these diamonds at 5 to 7. The GIA ranks these from N to R. These will show some color even when mounted.
Light color: The color of these diamonds becomes easier to see as the grade moves from 7.5 to 10. The GIA ranks these from S to Z.

Clarity

The higher a diamond’s clarity, the fewer inclusions or blemishes it contains. When you shop for your next diamond ring, always check for diamond clarity.

Similar to color, the higher the diamond’s clarity, the more expensive the best diamonds will be. Diamond clarity sometimes is not as important when buying a bracelet as opposed to an engagement ring because the stones are set in a bracelet.

Clarity is rated in the following way:

Flawless (FL) diamonds: No blemishes or inclusions.
Internally flawless (IF) diamonds: No internal inclusions, but some possible slight surface blemishes.
Very, very slightly included (VVS1 and VVS2) diamonds: Small inclusions that are hard to see, even with magnification.
Very slightly included (VS1 and VS2) diamonds: Minor inclusions that are easy to see when magnified but can’t be seen by the naked eye.
Slightly included (SI1 and SI2) diamonds: Inclusions that may be visible even without magnification.
Included (I1, (I2, and I3) diamonds: Inclusions that are easily seen by the naked eye.

Carat

Carat is a measure of a diamond’s physical weight, not its size. One carat is equal to ⅕, or .2, grams. Unlike the other C’s, there’s nothing subjective about this quality measurement: The scale doesn’t lie! Generally speaking, the more a diamond weighs, the more it will cost.
